Old Hymns: Great is Thy Faithfulness
Lately I've really been enjoying revisiting old hymns from my youth. I've found myself singing them to my girls a lot. It's weird to think that they could grow up in church and never be familiar with some of these songs. I realize that songs & culture change, but some of these songs are just so great that I hate to think that they could miss out. One thing I love about my home church in Kentucky is that it still incorporates hymns alongside of newer worship songs. Growing up though, we stuck pretty much to hymns - which I'm so thankful for because these songs are forever written in my memory. Some days are just so hectic that I don't have a ton of time to spend in the Word, but these songs are so rich in truth that they encourage me throughout the day. I just love the richness in history and writing style of a lot of these hymns and figured I'd bring a few back on the blog to hopefully encourage some of you and also just to document for my girls one day. Today's hymn: Great is Thy Faithfulness. Lyrics written in 1923 by Thomas O. Chisholm, music by William Runyan. The Biblical passage the song is based on is Lamentations 3:22-23, "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
Great is Thy faithfulness, oh God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.
Chorus: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Chorus
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Chorus
Tis true. Great is His faithfulness!
Much love,
