Twinsies Turn 4

I was out wrangling my crew at Mama Mecca the other day (aka Target) when a seasoned mama, with grey in her hair and wrinkles around her eyes, stopped me. She talked to the girls and fawned over Jude, and then she turned to me with tears in her eyes and said, “You have a beautiful family. Don’t blink, it really goes too quickly.”

I’ve heard this sentiment a thousand times, and every time it strikes a note in this weary mama’s heart.

She gently squeezed my arm, and then left me in my un-showered, dry shampooed, no make-up, hot-mess-whirlwind feeling like I had won the lottery to get to just BE in that moment. And I was truly so thankful.

Truth be told, 30 minutes prior I was yelling at my children to HURRY UP, GET IN THE CAR, WHERE ARE YOUR SHOES, DON’T PICK YOUR BROTHER’S NOSE, AND WHY DO YOU HAVE TO PEE NOW THAT YOU’RE BUCKLED IN???? We Salmons aren’t great at transitions I’m learning. Fuses are short, children are children, and this mama is always on the go… hurry hurry hurry.

But that sweet seasoned mama, with grandbabies of her own, really blessed me by helping me remember to slow down & enjoy these chaotic days. The days truly pass by so slowly, and yet so quickly.

The twins turned four a few weeks ago and my mama heart can't take it. I told someone the other day that I’m pretty sure I’m not going to survive motherhood. I’m already weepy about the small milestones like birthdays (it's 4, they're not turning 13 for heaven's sake! And I canNOT even start thinking about 16 #JesusTakeTheWheel #literally). They're running around still all cuddly and I'm all HOW AM I GOING TO SEND THEM TO COLLEGE????!!!!

YALL, I’m gonna have to get a grip or that Ben Salmon is going to have quite the time reminding me that they’re simply arrows in our quiver. They were made to fly and never mine to begin with.

And boy do those girls know how to fly.

(Someone hold me.)

Well my independent sassy girls wanted a Dory/Nemo themed bday party so a week prior Ben and I looked at each other and said, “OH SHOOT, it’s the twins' bday next week!!” So we texted our friends (no invites bc BLESS #hotmess) and off we went to the Dollar Store.

I wanted to blog these photos because so many of them capture the epitome of who the girls are during this season. It was truly such a fun day celebrating their vibrant little lives. So without further adieu, the girls’ 4th bday… (And for those of you who still can't tell them apart, Felicity is in the Blue swim top, Noel is in the Pink).

And just like that... they're 4. And 20% of their time with us is gone... That sweet grandmama was right, it just goes by too quickly.

Much love,

Thing 1 & Thing 2

"These Things will not bite you.
they want to have fun.'
then, out of the box
came Thing Two and Thing One!
and they ran to us fast.
they said, 'how do you do?
would you like to shake hands
with Thing One and Thing Two?"

Yall. I never knew how much fun Halloween was until we moved into this house. Last year, Ben & I had just closed on the house so we turned our front porch light off and worked upstairs in our house without blinds while herds of children swarmed by our house bitterly watching us paint through the windows all the while wondering why we had no candy. We were those Horrible. New. Neighbors.

This year we had to redeem ourselves & I was determined to do so.

Soooooo.... our friends and their kiddos came over and we shoved our faces with BOOritos from Chipotle and prepped for the masses. And can I just say... one thing I've learned over the last few months is that life is done better in community. It really is. A house full of laughing children, friends who know and love each other, and good food. Those are the things that make this broken world much more bearable. Community is God's gift to us, that is for certain. And so last night, amonst gobblins and witches and super heroes, we took our families door to door and watched our little neighborhood come alive... Together.

And our girls... Oh bless it. THEY HAD A BLAST. Here are a few... and by few I mean a dozen... photos from the night.

These moments right here. These pictures capture so much joy. And that last one of the girls... IS MY FAVORITE. Sisters. Forever. No matter what. <3

My one regret? We snapped all of these photos before our friends arrived... AND somehow we missed getting a group photo of all 7 children. BOO. SO BUMMED. (see what I did there? womp womp). Oh well! But still... so many good memories made last night.

<---- But this. I did capture.

When my sweet friend was loving on my little... I snapped this one. And friends... this is what I was talking about. Community. Such a blessing. Such a gift. I hope November is full of love and community for each of you as we enter the season of Thanksgiving.

Much love,

Letters to My Girls: Two's

I think every post that I have about the girls starts out with “Where does the time go?” or “Man Time flies…” and although I’d like to get creative and change it up a bit but… HOLY COW WHERE IN THE WORLD DOES THE TIME GO??????

I really just don’t get it.

I have two two year olds. Two walking, talking, sassy bundles of joy who sleep in big girl beds. There is so much to capture. So many moments I don’t want to forget and seeing how things change every time I blink... I better get started!

There are a lot of fun things about this stage but a few of my fav things about this stage are your language learning skills, your wrestling/giggling matches, and your joy in discovering new things.

Ok… your language. I mean… your dad and I could sit around and listen to you “talk” all day. You’re definitely slow to talking, but it has been such a fun journey. You still twin talk, but amongst the twin babble there are real words. Some we can make out, others not so much. But every week you get better and better.  My personal favorite is that you get some of your labials mixed up. For example instead of saying “candle” you say “camble.” And instead of "paci" you say "papi." And although sometimes you call me “mama,” you also call me “Baba.” And “look” is “gook…” and so on and so on. We love it. And if you forever call me Baba, I’d be 100% ok with it.

Ok… your wrestling matches. They. Are. Awesome. Like really really awesome. I think you might have a future in the WWF… ok maybe not… but your daddy & I get the biggest kick out of it. I’d go on and on… but I think this video is enough (fast forward to 35 sec and it gets going).

And this one is just of yall laughing... I mean... Be still my heart. Yall are awesome. (Also... I promise I dress you and bathe you... Promise. But let's keep it real. Some days are best spent in jammies and messy hair. These videos capture that. <3 )

And again… your joy. OOOOOOOF. It just makes my heart explode. I love how when you look in the sky and see and airplane or bird, your eyes light up and you yell “GOOK” or “OOOOH!” or “WOW!” Your eyes get large as saucers and my heart explodes, because I love looking at the world through your eyes.

The newness. The awe. The joy.

Speaking of JOY.  You love your grandparents A LOT… and it’s a shame the feeling isn’t mutual. JUST KIDDING. It’s ridiculous how much they love you back. You love to facetime with Grammy & Papaw and when I ask you to give them kisses, you kiss the phone instead of blowing kisses, so by the time I’m done my phone is slobbery and disgusting. But Grammy & Papaw love it. Then there’s Kiki & Gdaddy. You flip out when you see them and start squealing and yelling “Geeeeeee-daddddeeee” & “KiKeeeee.” Now whenever we say their names you run to the front door, which is awesome if they’re coming… but incredibly unfortunate whenever they aren’t.  Hello terrible two’s.

Oh and speaking of terrible two’s. I pray that one day God will give you beautiful joyful babies who are just as passionate and opinionated as you are. You’re welcome for that. And that’s all I’ll say about that… other than this... terrible two’s are a very real thing. You’ve been warned.

I guess what I’m trying to say is… Girlies… you are loved. A lot. Like a whole bunch. Like so much that sometimes I wonder if you’ll ever understand HOW MUCH you’re loved by us. Or if you'll be ruined by it all. But the truth is we love being your parents. Every second. Every sleepless night. Every giggle. Every fever. Every walk. Every “Baba” & “Dadee.” Every bath time. You are thoroughly and completely loved & we count it a privilege to be your parents (even during the terrible twos)... Such a joy.

Happy two's my two little ones!

Much love,
